As the sun rose into the sky above the river, two long lines of refugees began making their way towards Uruk, one towards the north gate and one towards the south. Every farming family for fifty leagues around, being driven forward by mounted Akkadians and packs of howling war dogs.

“King Akka is going to force every refugee on the river plains into the city,” I said.

“That’s a lot of mouths to be letting in,” Harga said. “What are your orders?”

“You know what they are.”

“We’ll be starving within days.”

“Just let them in,” I said. “What else can we possibly do?”
